Once known in antiquity as the Toronean Gulf, Porto Koufo is celebrated as the safest natural harbor in northern Greece. Its ancient name, Kofos — meaning “silent” or “deaf” in Greek — perfectly describes the bay’s remarkable stillness. According to ancient tradition, the sea could not be heard here at all, inspiring the Greek saying “quieter than Lake Kofos”, used to describe someone hard of hearing.

Located about 145 km from Thessaloniki, Porto Koufo enchants visitors with its unique landscape. Towering cliffs rise dramatically above the bay, which appears more like a tranquil lake than a part of the sea — the narrow channel connecting it to the open waters is barely visible from above. Beyond the rocky headland lies the ancient Cape Derris, once known to sailors of the Aegean.

Today, Porto Koufo remains the largest and safest natural harbor in northern Greece, constantly welcoming fishing boats, yachts, and sailing vessels of all kinds. During World War II, the Germans recognized its strategic value and used it as a naval base, fortifying the surrounding cliffs.

Now, peace has returned to this serene haven. Porto Koufo is a quiet fishing village that greets visitors with the irresistible aroma of freshly caught fish and the soothing sound of gentle waves — a hidden gem for those seeking authenticity, calm, and unspoiled beauty.
